CHARGING SYSTEM — Trouble-shooting (with IC regulator)
EL-26flowchartUnverifiedDense flowchart with parallel light-state branches (OFF / Dim / Bright); transcribed in linearised form.
Trouble-shooting
NOTE
Before conducting an alternator test, make sure that the battery is fully charged. A 30-volt voltmeter and suitable test probes are necessary for the test. The alternator can be checked easily by referring to the Inspection Table.
WARNING
Before starting trouble-shooting, inspect the fusible link.
WITH IC REGULATOR
Charging-system trouble-shooting (IC-regulator alternator)
1
Ignition switch "ON". (Check light for operation.)
Light "OFF"
Disconnect connector (S, L) and ground L lead wire. (Check light for operation.) — With alternator side L terminal grounded, internal short occurs if + diode is short-circuited.

Light "ON"
2
Engine idling (Check light for operation.)
Dim light / Light flickers / Bright light
Connect positive lead (+) of voltmeter on B terminal and negative lead (−) to L terminal from harness side. Engine idling. (Measure the voltage across "B" and "L" terminals.)

3
Engine speed: 1,500 rpm. Lighting switch "ON". (Check light for operation.)
Dim light / Light "OFF"
4
Engine speed: 1,500 rpm. (Measure B-terminal voltage.) Make sure connector (S, L) is connected correctly.
More than 15.5 V
More than 15.5 V → Damaged IC-RG. Replace.
13 to 15 V
5
13 to 15 V (idling check)
Light "OFF"
O.K.
Light "ON"
6
Damaged A.C.G.
NOTE
s:
1) Use fully charged battery.
2) Light = Charge warning light. A.C.G. = Alternator parts except IC regulator. IC-RG = IC regulator. O.K. = IC alternator is in good condition.
3) When reaching "Damaged A.C.G.", remove alternator from vehicle and disassemble, inspect and correct or replace faulty parts.
4) Terminals "S", "L", "B" and "E" are marked on rear cover of alternator.
