Disassembly

Power-steering gear disassembly

    Prior to disassembling, measure pinion rotating torque. Record the pinion rotating torque as a reference.
    Before measuring, disconnect gear housing tube and drain fluid.
    Use soft jaws when holding steering gear housing. Handle gear housing carefully, as it is made of aluminum. Do not grip cylinder in a vise.

    Remove pinion gear.
    Be careful not to damage pinion gear when removing pinion seal ring.

    Remove tie-rod outer sockets and boots.
  4. 4
    Loosen tie-rod inner socket by prying up staked portion, and remove socket.
    Hand using small chisel/screwdriver to pry the staked portion of the tie-rod inner socket open before unscrewing.

    Remove retainer.

    Remove pinion assembly.
  7. 7
    Drill staked portion of gear housing end with drill of 2 to 2.5 mm (0.079 to 0.098 in) diameter, until the staking is eliminated.
    Drill with 2 - 2.5 mm bit drilling out the staked portion of the gear-housing end before removing the end cover.

    Remove end cover assembly with suitable tool.
    Suitable tool removing the end cover assembly from the gear-housing end; rack assembly being drawn out.

    Draw out rack assembly.
  10. 10
    Remove rack seal ring.
    Using a heat gun, heat rack seal to approximately 40°C (104°F).
    Remove rack seal ring. Be careful not to damage rack.
    Replace rack seal ring and O-ring with new ones.
    Heat gun warming the rack seal ring on the rack assembly; arrow indicates direction of seal-ring removal.
